The most unique experience in LA-period.

I have heard so much about this place that I had to go. Most people I knew told me that it was great, but quite a few also hated it, so I thought I would check it out and decide for myself...well, sort of- cause my wife came along, too! Wow, are we glad we did!

First of all, you have to take a date, because it is hands down the most beautiful setting in LA. Although, there was a group of ladies celebrating something at a nearby table and they seemed to be having a good time without their hubbies. I completely understand the difference between my friends' opinions about this place now, because the ones who liked it are my laid back, fairly well adjusted friends, and the ones who didn't are my high-strung buddies. If you're the one leaning on the horn the instant the light turns green and the car in front of you hasn't sped off, then this place is not for you.BUT: if you want a nice, romantic dinner where you can actually spend quality time with someone that you actually want to speak to in between bites, then make a reservation NOW.

The food is made to order with attention to detail that really shows. Everything is fresh, organic and delicious. We started with an heirloom tomato salad that was to die for-so fresh-the waiter told us that the tomatos are not even sliced until we order it! I thought that was going to be the best thing, but then we had scallops-freshly seared, a portobello appetizer that blew away anything I have EVER had in LA! The main course was Lamb for me and some Australian fish that I have never heard of that my wife is still raving about. Maybe even better than the food was the wine. My wife and I are both big wine lovers and the new list(evidently there is both a new chef AND a new wine steward) is outstanding! They tell you all about which wines are organic and even biodynamic(they even tell you what that means) I have never seen anything like it, and every page I turned there were more amazing wines to choose from all of the greatest wineries in the world. But mainly California, and since we were eating California "new age" cuisine, we had California wine-well, my wife actually started with a glass a French Sauvignon Blanc, but we shared a bottle of pinot noir from the Ojai Vineyard(we took the bottle home)that absolutely stole the show.I had a really great viognier to start.

We both agreed that this was one of the best meals we have ever had in LA and if we had been eating at one of those snooty places downtown or in Beverly Hills we would have paid at least twice as much for food that was not as good. And the best part was- the fact that we weren't in some wannabe French style crowded art deco lounge (yeah, LA doesn't have enough of those!), but we were sitting by a creek, outdoors with real flowers all around us. We even heard coyotes! It was amazing!I can't believe we had never been there before and we are absolutely going back!

If you are the type who is always tapping your feet at the movies(waiting for it to end) and the explosion was your favorite part,or if at a restaurant with your significant other you want the waitress always hovering over you with a check in her hand waiting for you to leave, then this place is not your kind of restaurant. Head to Chevy's and you'll be happy. But if you want a special night, where you want to get to know that special someone, or spend the night with a group and enjoy great ambience, food and friends for an unrushed, memorable evening, then make a reservation now!

    Hippie Gourmet

We had Sunday Brunch. The grounds are beautiful and the atmosphere tranquil. The food is very fresh and the veggies organically grown. The heirloom tomatoes were amazing. The preparation is pretty good, but not great. Presentation of the buffet was a little "potluck" in its overall appearance. There wasn't a great selection of items and they ran out of some popular items -- e.g. crab legs, which were kinda' waterlogged anyway. The pastries were quite well-done. Overall the "4" rating is for a 4.5 on the grounds and a 3.5 on the food. On the value side, $35-40 is a bit pricey for good veggies and pastry. Still, it's a beautiful albeit remote location.

Excellent ambiance and Good food, but...

My fiancee and I went here for dinner on a Sunday night. You usually need reservations, but since it was a Sunday night, we got in okay. I enjoyed the ambiance and food, but I was somewhat disappointed. My conclusion is that I wouldn't drive too far out of my way for it unless you specifically want a restaurant with ambiance. The food was great, but for the price I could be more satiated elsewhere. The restaurant is out of the way, surrounded by some woods, and along a creek. I couldn't tell if the sounds of frogs croaking in the background was artificial or natural. We waited for about an hour until our appetizer showed up, and in the meantime, we ran out of bread which wasn't refilled for awhile. Since we're vegetarian, we ordered a portabello mushroom for the appetizer which came with a nice, sweet sauce. I ordered vegan duck--tofu that mimmicks meat so well that I couldn't tell if I was eating meat or not. My fiancee ordered the spinach risotto, which was also really good. But the portions were small so there were no left-overs to take home. Without wine, we spent about $70, including tip. I would go if you have lots of time (and money) to kill and are more interested in ambiance than having a full meal.

    Inn of the Seventh Ray

After the scathing LA Times review I was somewhat reluctant to stop by. But the prospect of a nice setting for an anniversary dinner with a menu that favored my wife's vegetarian palate made me take the drive up Topanga. Am I ever glad I did. The service was attentive without being overbearing. The food was fantastic. The setting, romantic. Sometimes a wake-up call is what it takes to get someone back on their game. They obviously were paying attention.

    The Worst Management Possible

We went to the Inn for a large wedding -- we've been there many times before for special occasions. The food has always been below average, but the atmosphere made up for it. This time, however, the management proved to be so incredibly poor we can say we will NEVER return. Bottom line was that our car was damaged by the valet service and the owners refused to take any responsibility despite the fact that the bride, who had spent tens of thousands of dollars there was furious. I've since read other horror stories of the valet service -- and again no responsibility taken by management -- horrors of the food, the service, the wait...I think all has been attacked except perhaps the bathrooms (although they did smell of raw sewage the night I was there). All I can say is that until the management decides that customer service and professional integrity and responsibility is the name of the game here, I can not recommend anyone go there. We're still paying for the $1,100 worth of damage to our car. OH AND BY THE WAY: The Inn of the 7th ray was closed down by the health dept on Thursday July 25 2008 for unsanitary conditions (an infestation of r oaches). You can confirm this with the Los Angeles County Health dept or The Topanga Messenger. * Pros: very high prices * Cons: unsanitary conditions
